30 minute Playroom Reset

So last time around we covered a quick reset of your kitchen and at this time of year the area I am asked to reset most is without doubt playrooms or toy storage, so here goes….

We need to consider what is on our kids wish lists that may be coming into our homes very soon. Also consider the exit strategy, research in advance where the items that you decide to donate will go.

I’ll refer to ‘playroom’ here but am very aware lots of people have toys in kids’ bedrooms, the kitchen/living spaces and the same rules will apply in terms of how to reset and stay on top of the space.

Set those 30 minute timers and……GO

1)     The quickest way to get a result in a space is to start with the biggest items in the room. In our playroom we had a HUGE couch from when we bought the house and it took up so much room by removing it, it allowed us to put more storage options in place. The kids were sitting on the floor anyway so it wasn’t being used. Take a look at your space are there BIG items that if you removed would be quick wins?

2)     Now take a look at what toys are the kids no longer loving that could do donated – look at each category – Games, Art, Lego, Dolls – within each category can you remove 20% of the items? Or maybe like the house I was working on today maybe a whole category of items is no longer being played with – in today’s case it was Paw Patrol – the kids had moved on and these perfectly good toys were gathering dust.

3)     Books – this is always a difficult category as we have sentimental attachment sometimes to the book we read to our children – but again the aim of the game is to make space for what is coming in and what the kids will love and play with.

4)     The floor - we need to find homes for everything on the floor. Best thing to do is make bundles:

a.      Recycle/Bin

b.      Donate

c.      Put away

5)     For step 4 involve the kids – the last thing we want is to donate huge amounts of toys that our kids will come looking for – see if they will agree with what should be donated in order to make room for Santa. Can you make this process fun for them???

6)     For the last 5 minutes do a sweep, hoover/mop the floor and voilà the space will hopefully be tidier, more manageable and less clutter than 30 minutes ago!!

As with the kitchen what we are doing with this 30 minute reset is tackling the quick wins and big ticket items – but also identifying where the problems are with the room – is it incorrect storage, insufficient storage or is volume the issue – do you need to consider implementing toy rotation. Remember if you feel overwhelmed in the space it is likely your child does too so by reducing what lives in the playroom will actually mean they play with more of their toys.

My top rule for Playroom resets –

BIG TOYS = BIG STORAGE

SMALL TOYS = SMALL STORAGE

Hoping that you found this helpful – if you ever need more information or would like to get your playroom fully reset get in touch through the website, WhatsApp or Instagram and we can set up your initial phone consultation and go from there.

Thanks, Hazel x
